THE FUTURE OF TRANSLATION

Humans VS AI: Navigating a New Frontier in Translation

With technology continuing to advance, the realm of translation services has seen a significant transformation with the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI). While AI in translation clearly presents numerous advantages, it also raises concerns and considerations that should not be confined to our human translators.

A scale with a balance between human translation services and ai.

As AI seems to have become a part of our everyday lives, GORR thought it was time to delve into the opportunities and obstacles it presents and explore what this could all mean for the professionals behind the words.

OPPORTUNITIES

A lightbulb held between human hands symbolising the opportunities presented by AI for translation.

Speed and Efficiency:

It’s true. It’s true. AI-powered translation tools excel in speed and efficiency, capable of processing vast amounts of text in a fraction of the time it would take a human translator. This particularly advantageous for (some) time-sensitive projects and potentially also for large-scale content localization.

Cost-Effectiveness:

Automated translation solutions can be more cost-effective for businesses than a professional translation partner, especially when dealing with high-volume content. This cost efficiency is appealing to companies with budget constraints, allowing them to manage translation service expenses more effectively.

Consistency:

AI translation technology ensures consistency in translation output. It adheres to a set of predefined rules, maintaining uniformity in language usage and terminology throughout the translated material, a challenge that can be more variable in the case of human translators.

24/7 Availability:

AI doesn’t rest. Its round-the-clock availability is particularly beneficial for businesses operating in different time zones, ensuring that translation services are accessible whenever needed. This could be especially beneficial in emergency situations when it is not possible to wait on the arrival of a translator.

Data-Driven Improvements:

AI systems continuously learn and adapt from vast datasets, improving their translation capabilities over time. This iterative learning process enhances accuracy and language proficiency. If put to good use, such tools can enhance the abilities of its human counterparts improving language translation services overall.

OBSTACLES:

A labyrinth of obstacles created by the use of AI.

Contextual Understanding:

One of the primary challenges AI faces is grasping the nuances of language and context. Human translators bring cultural insights and contextual understanding that AI translation services may struggle to replicate accurately. This could unintentionally lead to a considerable loss of meaning or cultural significance to a target audience resulting in the work amounting to nothing or even causing offence.

Creativity and Nuance:

At the end of the day, translating isn’t just about converting words; it involves capturing the subtle nuances, cultural idiosyncrasies, and creative elements of a text. As such, AI lacks the ability to find creative solutions to complex translation issues or localization strategy and has a tendency to repeat words and phrases leaving all texts with a rather boringly familiar format likely leading to lower reach, engagement and readership.

Lack of Emotional Intelligence:

Understanding the emotional tone of a piece is crucial to the transfer of particularly sensitive information (between doctor and patient or customer support, for example), marketing or literary translations. Here, AI is just not capable of the emotional intelligence and sensitivity necessary to interpret and convey the intended sentiment with the same finesse of a human translator.

Complexity Handling:

Highly specialized or technical translation requires a deep understanding of the subject matter. While AI continues to improve, it can struggle to handle the complexity of certain domains that demand human expertise and experience. Essentially, there are many fields where a translator’s physical, personal experience is crucial to passing along information accurately. This has been known to include the inclusion of stereotypes, particularly racial and gender disparities, which is often intensified by AI.

Ethical Concerns:

AI in translation raises ethical considerations, particularly regarding privacy and data security. Human translators adhere to professional standards and confidentiality, whereas AI translation technology might pose risks related to data breaches and misuse. With organizations worldwide now able to use AI to collect, store, process and make use of data, there are rising concerns regarding personal privacy rights that have yet to be resolved.

So, Does That Mean We’re Out of Work?

Far from it. While AI offers much in terms of efficiency and speed, it simply does not and cannot replace role of human translators. Instead, it transforms their role allowing human translators to focus on tasks that require nuanced understanding, creativity, and cultural sensitivity. Therefore, collaboration is likely the best option with professionals overseeing, refining, and adding the ever indispensable human touch to AI output.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, human translators remain essential due to the nuanced and ever-changing complexities of language, culture, and context, ensuring that the art of translation will continue to thrive. As the abilities of AI further advance, we at GORR believe it would be wise to leverage this technology as a valuable tool, embracing a future where the synergy of artificial and human intelligence brings forth unparalleled linguistic excellence.
